TJ Entrance Exam Coaching for 7th and 6th Graders
At the Durga Temple and Reston locations from 12/5/09
Introduction: For children, there is a growing need for acquiring solid foundation in basics of mathematics, writing, reading comprehension, and analytical and logical reasoning early on to strengthen their chances of getting admission into the Thomas Jefferson (TJ) High School for Science and Technology. To get into TJ your child should have: excellent grades in 7th and 8th grades, strong teacher recommendation letters, excellent entrance exam scores, good essay scores etc. Excelling in all these categories requires a strong academic foundation from as early as the 6th grade so that your child not only gets ‘A’ grades in all subjects but also becomes either the best or one of the best 2-3 students in the class. Academic excellence is necessary for getting strong recommendation letters from school teachers. Effective essay writing skills can not be developed in a short period of time and often require about 2-3 years time. To become a fast and accurate reader and a good writer one needs to develop good vocabulary, which also requires long time preparation. So, do not wait until your child enters into the 8th grade, to prepare him/her for the TJ admission process. In case, if you can not prepare your child for the TJ admission yourself, consider sending him/her for the comprehensive coaching classes conducted by the experienced educators. We have been coaching children for TJ admission for four years with a very good success rate. Our coaching philosophy is to impart a solid knowledge of basics in both Mathematics and English early on, which serves the student well not only for TJ selection but through out their later academic life. Recommended age group for coaching is rising 6th graders and up. Knowledge acquired in our coaching classes helps students in doing well in school work too, as mentioned above. This is very important because grades are one of the key components used in the TJ selection process. Students seeking TJ admission are advised to attend Johns Hopkins University - Center for Talented Youth (JHU-CTY) summer programs in their 6th or 7th grade summer. To be eligible for the JHU-CTY program, students need to demonstrate their competency by scoring reasonably well in SAT I. Hence, early coaching is beneficial and highly recommended. Our long-term TJ coaching program emphasizes on SAT I, including English verbal and writing. We coached more than 60 students for TJ Entrance Exam in the last three years. Currently, we are coaching about thirty 8th graders and thirty 7th and 6th graders. In the most recent batch, 17 of our students were admitted into TJ. Our long-term coaching is mainly geared towards improving fundamental knowledge in both Mathematics and English.
