About Us
A Legacy of Faith, Culture, and Community
Since its founding, the Hindu community in the Washington Metropolitan area has reflected the nature and philosophy of attracting immigrants to the United States from all over the world. Buoyed by this country's freedom, liberty, and opportunity, countless people have come here.
A Short History
Since 1999, the Hindu community in the Washington D.C. metropolitan area has reflected the enduring American ideals of freedom, liberty, and opportunity. Guided by these values, immigrants from India have contributed richly to the region's cultural and spiritual landscape.
Through diverse cuisines, languages, music, and vibrant Hindu traditions, the community has woven meaningful threads into the broader Indian American fabric. Today, this multicultural community continues to flourish - strengthening connections, preserving heritage, and fostering a dynamic and inclusive environment for future generations.

The Establishment of Durga Temple
Hindu migration to the United States grew substantially after the independence of South Asian and other formerly colonized nations in the mid-20th century. The Washington metropolitan area became a major destination for highly skilled professionals, many of whom went on to establish successful businesses under U.S. law.
As the community expanded, these professionals and entrepreneurs came together to build places of worship and cultural preservation, including the Siva Vishnu Temple, Hindu and Jain Temples and the Rajdhani Temple.
In 1989, with the vision and support of pioneering Hindu business leaders, the Durga Temple was established, becoming an important spiritual and cultural hub for the growing Hindu community.
